Bring your skills and experience to change lives

Doing whatever it takes

team_230px.pngAt the heart of SHiFT’s approach will be the relationship the child or young person has with a SHiFT Guide. Participants will typically spend 18 months with their SHiFT Guide who will have the time, skills, experience and support to do whatever it takes to get alongside each child and young person - helping them to change their life so that so that, one day, they will no longer be needed.

One SHiFT Guide takes on a lead role within the team however a SHiFT team is not traditionally hierarchical; making decisions as a group, taking collective responsibility for SHiFT delivery, and sharing knowledge and experience to maximise good practice.

Within the youth justice system in the UK children and young people from minority groups, particularly black males, are acutely overrepresented. This is especially true in London, where SHiFT is piloting its first two programmes. Recent research, for example the Power the Fight report, highlights the importance of children and young people seeing themselves reflected in the services on offer in order to have confidence that they will be truly understood.

Our impact will only be achieved through the exceptional local SHiFT teams working directly with SHiFT participants, and it is vital that those teams reflect the individuals and communities they serve. Therefore, we actively encourage black applicants to apply for SHiFT roles - bringing the experience, skills and knowledge needed to support children and young people to break the destructive cycles which leads to them committing crimes.

Where do you fit in?

As a SHiFT Lead Guide you will be responsible for leading and maintaining the high quality delivery of the SHiFT pilot in your area - ensuring the local SHiFT Team makes the most of the support available to them through the SHiFT Framework, practices, and local resources, and by working across agencies and organisations as a champion of SHiFT and SHiFT participants.

Whilst your role is not a traditional team manager, your skills as a flexible and innovative leader, and experience as a practitioner will allow you to lead team meetings, group supervision, and collective decision making – empowering the whole team to share responsibility for the outcomes of SHiFT participants, team wellness, local learning and development, and partnerships with relevant services and organisations.

This is an ideal role for experienced social workers, teachers, youth workers or other professionals with strong leadership experience who want to invest their professional life in meaningful, skilled and direct work with children.

You will lead by example in forming and developing supportive relationships with 2-3 children or young people (around half the number of a SHiFT Guide) who are, or are at risk of, repeatedly committing crimes. You will be a constant presence in their lives, offering a stable point of focus for expert support through pre-offending behaviours and active periods of offending, custody and release. You will be there for them in moments of crisis when they are in most need of support and are open to being challenged about the decisions that got them into trouble – as well as to celebrate successes, big and small.

Anchored in the Breaking Cycles Model you will provide SHiFT participants with the focused, consistent and effective attention of a highly-skilled practitioner with the time, support, and experience to do whatever it takes to build trust and find a connection that can bring change.

SHiFT is a pilot of a new way of working which you will help shape and develop. As a SHiFT Lead Guide you will have access to a high-quality ongoing training programme and be part of a collaborative and inspiring SHiFT community.
